The Canadian Soccer Association announced on Sunday that four members of Vancouver Whitecaps FC U-18 Girls Elite have been named to the 21-player roster for the third edition of the FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup. Included on the roster are defender Aman Shergill, midfielder/striker Jasmin Dhanda, and strikers Summer Clarke and Elissa Neff.
Clarke, Dhanda, and Neff are among 17 returning members from the Canadian team that won silver at the 2012 CONCACAF Women's Under-17 Championship in May of this year. Of note, Clarke was Canada’s leading scorer in the tournament with six goals.
Canada will take part in the 2012 FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup in Azerbaijan from September 22 to October 14, with all three group matches to be played in the capital city of Baku.
"I think the players are quite excited," said Canadian U-17 head coach Bryan Rosenfeld. "It has been an exciting year for our women's program, so that has reflected quite positively on our young players."
Canada is one of 16 teams competing in this year's tournament, with the teams split evenly into four separate groups. In the group phase, Canada will face Nigeria on September 22, Colombia on September 25 and host Azerbaijan on September 29. Of note, Canada and Nigeria are two of eight teams that have competed in all three editions of the FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup.
The quarter-final phase features match ups between Groups A & B (on October 4) and Groups C & D (on October 5). Along with Canada, Colombia, Nigeria and Azerbaijan, teams competing in this year's FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup are: France, Gambia, Korea DPR, and USA in Group B; Brazil, Japan, Mexico, and New Zealand in Group C; and China PR, Germany, Ghana, and Uruguay in Group C.
