It’s a big day for soccer in this country.
On the women's side, Canada host New Zealand in their second match of the 2015 FIFA Women's World Cup. The men, on the other hand, are set to open their 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign against CONCACAF minnows Dominica.
Here’s what you need to know about both matches.
CanWNT vs. New Zealand
Kickoff: 6 p.m. PT
Broadcast: CTV, TSN2
After opening the tournament with a dramatic 1-0 win over China, the Canadians will be looking to make it two for two tonight in Edmonton.
Tonight's opponent, New Zealand, fell 1-0 to the Netherlands in their opener. Interestingly, John Herdman coached New Zealand for six years before taking over the Canadian gig.
“They’re the enemy at this point," Herdman said in his pre-match press conference. “They’re going to bring a physicality to this game and a higher intensity to this game than the Chinese did. So you’ll see Canada adjusting the style and we’ll be very balanced in the way that we play against New Zealand and take what they give us.”
CanMNT vs. Dominica
Kickoff: 4 p.m. PT
Broadcast: TBA (stay tuned to @CanadaSoccer for updates)
Canada will open the two-leg aggregate series tonight at Windsor Park in Roseau, before hosting the second leg on June 16 in Toronto.
Should Canada win the series against Dominica, they’ll go into the draw for the third and fourth rounds of qualifying. The draw for those rounds takes place on July 25, 2015, and would see another home-and-away series in the third round in September before entering the fourth round in a four-team round robin competition that would start in November.
