With their 2014 season opener just around the corner, Vancouver Whitecaps FC's United Soccer Leagues (USL) PRO affiliate Charleston Battery finished off their preseason in impressive fashion, bombarding their counterparts Georgia Southern University by a score of 7-0.
The 'Caps have five players, in addition to a pair of draft picks, on loan to Charleston. In their most recent outing, midfielder Adam Mena scored in the first half and striker Mamadou Diouf buried a second-half hat-trick as the Battery cruised to victory over the NCAA Division I side. Diouf and Mena now each have four goals in their last four preseason matches with the Battery.
Midfielder Andre Lewis picked up three assists in those four games. Meanwhile, midfielder Aminu Abdallah recorded 135 minutes, defender Jackson Farmer played 135 minutes and earned one assist, midfielder Michael Kafari recorded 45 minutes, and striker Marlon Ramirez has played 90 minutes.
Recently, all seven players took part in an in-depth interview on chssocer.net where they talk about how they’re adjusting to South Carolina and being a member of the Battery. In the interview, Diouf and Lewis talk about the camaraderie that has formed between the two from their time as roommates during the 2014 preseason with Whitecaps FC. The guys also showed their teamwork off the pitch as Farmer and Kafari did a duet during the team's karaoke night.
Charleston finished their preseason campaign with a 5W-2L-2D record. They will host defending USL PRO champion Orlando City SC, who now feature former 'Caps Corey Hertzog and Brad Rusin, in their season opener on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. PT - watch live on the Battery website.
