Whitecaps FC begin their run in the Audi 2017 MLS Cup Playoffs this Wednesday, October 25 in the single elimination Knockout Round against San Jose Earthquakes. Kickoff is at 7:30 p.m. PT at BC Place. Tickets are available at ticketmaster.ca/whitecapsfc.
Fredy Montero (13), Cristian Techera (6), and Yordy Reyna (6) are the top three goalscorers on Vancouver Whitecaps FC. They have combined for 50 per cent of the ‘Caps scoring this season.
In the six matches that they have all started together, they have never been kept off the scoreboard, and not one opposing team has been able to beat the 'Caps.
Over a seven-match unbeaten streak from August 19 to September 23, the trio started five matches together and combined for nine goals and nine assists during that stretch.
Fun times were had by all.
Since that time, due to international absences, babies, and injuries, they have only started once together in the past five matches, with at least one of them absent from the opening kick in Seattle, KC, at NY Red Bulls, and Portland.
The one match that they did start together in the past month? The 1-1 home draw against San Jose Earthquakes where Techera helped set-up a Reyna goal. Reyna and Montero combined for another four shots on target, and as we've seen throughout their time together, more often than not those have gone in.
In the end, this Whitecaps FC team have displayed a tremendous level of depth throughout the season. It’s what earned them massive road wins in Orlando and Kansas City. Discipline, character, grit, and determination have frequently been this team's hallmark over 34 matches.
But the numbers show that when the top three scorers on the team are playing together, the ‘Caps are an awfully tough team to stop.
And now that they’re all available again... watch out.
