At the helm of Palmeiras’s U15 side, Dos Santos brought forth an aggressive defensive approach. This ran contrary to the possession-heavy style of play for which Brazilians have long been celebrated.
“Brazilians are proud,” said Dos Santos. Every week, someone else would tell him or his wife that he had no business coaching in Brazil. “If you challenge them a little bit, they’ll say they have five stars on their jerseys. ‘How many do you have?’ What am I going to say as a Canadian?”
