This weekend, the fifth edition of the annual Whitecaps FC Showcase presented by Sport Chek begins at Newton Athletic Park. Over 80 elite youth soccer teams will participate. Teams come from right here in British Columbia, including teams from the BC Soccer Premier League (BCSPL), as well as teams from Alberta and Ontario, and American teams from Washington and Oregon.
University coaches from across Canada and the United States will be on site to scout talent for their programs, including representatives from schools such as Kansas, Penn State, and the University of Ottawa.
Adding to a great weekend, many of the participating teams at the showcase will be attending Saturday's MLS match between Whitecaps FC and LA Galaxy at BC Place.
The event kicks off on Friday, 9 a.m. at Newton Athletic Park. Friday will also feature a match between the Whitecaps FC Girls Elite team and a WFC Elite Alumni squad.
On Saturday the action shifts to South Surrey Athletic Park. The Girls Elite squad will be on the field again to face Quest University. The day will also feature matches from the 'Caps U-16 and U-18 Residency teams as they host Washington Crossfire in United States Soccer Development Academy (USSDA) action.
Whitecaps FC Pre-Residency will also be taking part, playing on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
Keep an eye out on Sunday for Whitecaps FC MLS stars signings autographs. Erik Hurtado and Kekuta Manneh will be on-site from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., Gershon Koffie and Carlyle Mitchell from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m., and Russell Teibert from 3:00 p.m. to 4 p.m. PT. Teibert will also be giving a special pep talk to the Mountain United U-16 boys who earned this unique opportunity through a special draw with tournament partners Sport Chek.
